Evalore Martha Modiano, Nana, never did anything small – her first act was to come into the world weighing ten pounds in Breslau, Germany, May 10, 1928 to Ruth and Hermann Mamlok. She spent a happy childhood with her older brother, Julius, riding rocking horses and playing make believe and chasing after the family dachshund. Nana and her family fled Germany in 1939 on the Statendam ship out of Amsterdam, landing like many who emigrated at Ellis Island and starting the next chapter of her new life in Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Shortly after matriculating at the Fashion Institute of Technology’s high school (and begrudgingly learning how to make hats) she met the absolute love of her life, Sam Modiano, while working at a department store. After a brief and exciting courtship, Sam and Eve were engaged and married by the Rabbi the morning of September 16, 1951 – enjoying some wedges for lunch with their new family before returning to work for the afternoon. A few years of newlywed bliss was followed by the joyous birth of their son, Albert, and a few years later, their daughter, Stephanie. Nana spent her life dedicated to her family and her community and was loved by all and raised her family in Dobbs Ferry, NY, spending summers on Cape Cod. Nana’s legacy continued with four grandchildren: Aaron (Nicola), Sarah (Jeremy), Samantha (Jeffrey), and Rebecca (Todd) and two great-grandchildren Sammy and Sonya. Nana is survived by all listed as well as her son-in-law Robert, and her daughter-in-law, Beth. Nana was pre-deceased by her brother, Julius. Nana passed away on Tuesday, August 3,, 2021 peacefully with all of her family around her and joins her husband, Sam, in spirit.
