Eula Burwell Powell was the fifth of eight siblings born to Ulysses Simpson and Sallie Evans Burwell. Her journey began August 23, 1931 and ended peacefully on September 17, 2012 when she went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Eula was very active in church, Sunday School and the community during her early childhood. She was always willing to participate wherever there was a need. At age 11, she made a profession of her faith, was baptized and became a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Clarksville, VA.
Eula was educated in the public schools of Mecklenburg County, VA. She attended and graduated from Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA with a degree in Library Science. She did further studies at the University of Maryland and earned the MEQ. She retired from the Montgomery County School System in 1987.
Eula and her late husband, Robert, were brought together in the home of Victor and Cordelia Powell, (friends and teachers). This was the beginning of a romance that led to marriage in 1958. To this union was born three lovely children: Brian Anthony, Carole Leonard and Robert Chester, Jr. who passed away in 1988. Later, Eula and Robert, Sr. became the proud grandparents of four granddaughters, one grandson and one great grandson.
Eula was involved in many social and civic organizations. She served on the Planning Committee of the NAACP National Convention held in Silver Spring, MD in 1975. She was active in and a charter member of Delicados, Inc. (a social and civic organization) for 35 years. She held several national positions and served on several committees. At the time of her death, she was an Emeritus Member of Delicadas, Inc.
In 2006, she joined the Montgomery County Chapter of the Piarians, Inc., an organization devoted to the purpose of promoting and encouraging the study and enjoyment of the fine arts.
Eula and family united with Takoma Park Baptist Church in 1970 under the administration of Dr. Paul Gillespie. She became the church librarian and served for 10 years. She sang in the Sanctuary Choir and worked in the Wednesday Club until her health began to decline.
Eula leaves to mourn her passing, two children, Brian Anthony Powell (Ardella) and Carole Leonard Powell Walker (Michael); five grandchildren, Tara Alease Webb, Chardai Alexis Powell, Dominique Ashanté Powell, Leia Reneè Michelle Walker and Marques Douglas Bobby Walker; great grandson, Caden Webb; goddaughter, Marquita Russell; three brothers, Everette Evans Burwell (Elsie) of Clarksville, VA, Lloyd Lester Burwell (Sharon) of Brooklyn, NY and Stanley Castello Burwell (Marion) of Clarksville, VA; sisters-in-law, Hattie Sue Powell West of Suffolk, VA and Doris Powell of Maryland; brother-in-law, George C. Powell (Shirley) of Hampton, VA; three devoted friends, Jourdinia (Roger) Brown of Washington, DC, Juanita Russell of Emporia, VA and Lois (Carr) Wilson of Rockville, MD, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
