Eugene was born on October 7, 1953 in Jersey City, NJ to Eugenio and Marta Torres. In 1972, he graduated from Ferris High School in Jersey City, NJ. After graduation, Eugene pursued a professional career in baseball and his impressive batting skills caught the attention of scouts who invited him to try out for the Astros. Although he was not drafted, Eugene enjoyed playing in minor league tournaments across the country for the Jersey City Eagles and the Poetas in Puerto Rico.
In 1987, Eugene set his sights on a different field. He traded in his bat and mitt for safety goggles to work in chemical manufacturing at Mona Idustries Inc., (Uniqema) in Paterson, NJ. He earned additional professional certifications at NJIT and was promoted to Plant Supervisor during his 20 years with the company. After Uniqema closed its plant in New Jersey, Eugene worked in the armored transportation and security industry until his retirement in October 2015.
Eugene was a devoted family man, an avid sports enthusiast and disco music lover. His children remember him fondly as a wonderful father who instilled in them a love for God and encouraged them to pursue their goals. Eugene’s laughter will be deeply missed by family, friends and all who knew him.
