Eugene Phelps, July 5, 1930 – June 3, 2018.
Eugene Phelps, 87, of Belton passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, June 3, 2018 after a short illness.
Gene was born on July 5, 1930 in Adel, Georgia to Robert and Flonnie (Wooten) Phelps. He was raised in Adel and joined the US Army on November 2, 1948. He completed basic training at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina and after was stationed at Camp Hood (now Ft. Hood) where his brother was stationed. He was then sent to Ft. Lewis, Washington with the 2nd Infantry Division, and soon after was deployed to Korea. While serving in Korea, Gene was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Presidents Unit Citation Medal, and the Korean Service Ribbon with 5 Bronze Stars.
After leaving the Army in 1951, Mr. Phelps began working as a carpenter and later as an electrician with Civil Service at Ft. Hood. Mr. Phelps retired in 1993 after 30 years with Civil Service. Mr. Phelps married Wilma June Woods in 1950 and they were married for 65 years until she passed away in 2015. Gene was an avid fisherman, enjoyed riding his motorcycle, and was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Belton.
Mr. Phelps was preceded in death by his wife, a young daughter Joanna Phelps in 1955, brothers Willard Phelps, Roland Phelps, Alton Phelps, and Robert Phelps, and a sister Mollie Phelps Brady. He is survived by his son Donald Phelps and his wife Celena of Belton, sister Kate Phelps Hutchinson of Adel, Georgia, and granddaughter Abbigale Phelps of Belton.
