Eugene “Gene” M. Kurtz, 87, of the LaSalle Veteran’s Home, formerly of Peru, passed away Friday evening, July 27, 2018 at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley. Mr. Kurtz was born on July 15, 1931 in LaSalle to Michael and Helen (Dziurynski) Kurtz. He married Bernadette Kaznowski on September 8, 1956 in St Peter and Paul Church, Spring Valley. He served in the US Navy during the Korean War, served on the USS Sigourney.
Gene worked as an engineer for CSX Railroad. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Peru, Peru VFW and the LaSalle Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife, Bernadette of Peru; his children, Jane (Jerry) Burmeister of St. Louis, MO, William (Carla) Kurtz of Apple Valley, MN, Jill (Paul) Svare of Marengo, IA and Sara (Steven) Graglia of Atlanta, GA; 11 grandchildren, Brett, Brian, Lisa and Bradley Burmeister, Michael and Mitchell Kurtz, Matt, Joe, and Gina Svare, Savanna and Scarlett Graglia. and one great-grandson, Eddie Burmeister. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Timothy J. Kurtz; and one brother, Edward Kurtz.
