Eugene H. Smith, age 92 of Rensselaer passed away Sunday, September 22, 2013 at the Jasper County Hospital. Eugene was born in Corydon, Indiana on March 9, 1921, the son of Minor and Anna (Tranum) Smith. Eugene moved to Rensselaer in 1948.
He was a 1940 graduate of Kentland High School. Eugene was a farmer, retiring in 1988. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Rensselaer, and a 50+ year member of Prairie Lodge #125, F & A.M. Eugene was an avid golfer and was a past member of both Curtis Creek Country Club and Hazelden Country Club. On March 15, 1941, in Kentland, Eugene married Alma “Lucille” Hampton who survives.
Surviving with his loving wife Lucille are three children, Jerald Smith, Otterbein, Ind., Donna (Steve) Erickson, Howell, Mich. and Eugene M. “Rick” (Carol) Smith, Kentland, Ind. ; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two sisters, Barbara McCullough, Highland, Ind. and Eleanor (Tom) Koopmans of La Harpe, Ill. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Max, Leroy and John, and two granddaughters, Stacey and Holly.
