Eugene (Gene) Cornelius Greene (93) of Melbourne, Florida, passed away January 3, 2017 due to complications from a large stroke. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his devoted family. He is survived by his loving wife Phyllis of 68 years, his five children and their spouses, 16 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Eugene was born in Chicago, IL then moved to Waukegan, Illinois.
Gene was an avid woodcarver. He was a member of both the Richmond, In and Melbourne, FL wood carving clubs, winning several awards.
The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks played a significant role in Gene’s life. He was a active member and served as a Trustee in several lodges.
Gene and Phyllis moved to Melbourne, FL in 2001.
As a veteran and hero, Gene received the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroic conduct, he became a member of The Honor Flight trip for September, 2015. This is how he felt about veterans; “If we cannot do him honor while he’s here to hear the praise, Then at least let’s give him homage at the ending of his days.
Perhaps just a simple headline in a paper that would say, Pay honor to this hero, for a veteran died today.”
