Eugene Phillips, 71, bid farewell to this mortal realm on July 14, 2023.
Born on June 6, 1952, in Sangre Grande, Trinidad and Tobago, Eugene immigrated to Brooklyn, New York, in his late teenage years, along with his siblings, Michael, Cathleen, and Robert. Eugene navigated the discomfort of learning a new culture with curiosity, openness, and practicality. Many years later, after an explorative time in New York and Ohio, his studies and pursuit of a basketball career led to a crossroads.& With the advice of his mother, Veronica Phillips, he decided to enlist in the US Navy. He dedicated 20 years of service as a submariner and communications specialist, honorably retiring in 1998. He pursued further education at Old Dominion University, graduating with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration, specializing in Accounting.
Eugene was an engaging philosopher, a lover of history, of his community, and a bibliophile. Eugene’s positivity and encouragement radiated throughout the lives of so many people, especially his friends and family. He lived life loudly and bravely, his joy apparent when breaking out into dance once hearing one of his favorite songs, watching or playing basketball, or even when engaging in a philosophical or political debate.
Eugene is survived by his eldest son, Turé, his twin children, daughter Genice, and son Gerod. His knowledge and guidance were the foundation of his family. He was a strong, kind, loving, and supportive father. He faced every challenge in life with admirable strength and courage. He was a man of strong faith, and he believed in the importance of family, hard work and doing what is right.
Eugene, you are now at peace, but you will live on forever in our hearts. We love you so much. May you dance with ancestors, and bless your family, friends, and community as we keep you in memory.
