Eugene Brooks, 78 years old, died at INOVA Hospital in Alexandria, VA on Wednesday, May 1, 2013.  He was born in Fauquier County, Virginia on March 15, 1935 to the late Moses and Sallie Brooks.  Eugene was the fourth oldest of eight children.  He grew up in Alexandria, VA and was educated in the Virginia public school system.

In 1955, he joined the United States Army where he served for 10 years and was honorably discharged.  After the military, he landed a position with the city of Alexandria, VA as a Sanitation worker; where he worked for 25 years until retirement. Eugene received many accolades and awards during his tenure as a Sanitation worker.   In 1961, he met the late Anna Dell Payne and together they had two children.

Eugene gave his life to the lord and joined the Russell Temple CME Church where he was baptized.  He was active on various Church ministries such as the Usher Board, Brotherhood and he sang with the Male Chorus.

Eugene and his beloved Alice Muriel spent many years together as a couple prior to their official marriage ceremony.  On March 21, 2001, they were joined together in holy matrimony and were together until her death on October 18, 2012.

Eugene will always be remembered by his family and friends for singing and dancing; he was instrumental in teaching his baby sister to dance.  Eugene was a mild mannered person and was known as a peacemaker.

Eugene was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Muriel Copeland, three brothers, John, Moses, and Morris Brooks and two sisters, Nancy and Beatrice.

Left to cherish his memory are his two sons Eugene Payne Jr. (Janice) of Accokeek, MD and Darryl Payne of Clinton, MD; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two sisters Kate Johnson of Alexandria, VA and Margaret Brown of Woodbridge, VA; three stepchildren, several step great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other family members.  Also, left to cherish Eugene’s memories is a very special friend, Betty Brooks.
