Eugene A. “Gene” Haggerty, 95, of Jacksonville, IL, died Monday, June 28, 2021, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
He was born August 2, 1925, to John B. and Hazel Linn Haggerty. Gene married Mary Nell Harp on June 25, 1950, in Canton, and she preceded him in death on February 2, 2011.
He is survived by three children, Carolyn K. Haggerty of Jacksonville, Cindy (Jamie) Boydston of Wildwood, MO, and Jeff (Lesa) Haggerty of Jacksonville; six grandchildren, Jaime (Jason) Crowe, Jennifer (Shawn) Cozart, Brian (Adrian) Baker, Kelsey (Kyle) Sherwood, Drew Haggerty, and Ashley Haggerty; and three great grandchildren, Hayden Cozart, Kaelyn Cozart, and Wyatt Baker. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one sister, Dorothea Baughman; and one brother, Robert Haggerty.
Mr. Haggerty was a 1943 graduate of Canton High School. In 1958, he and Mary Nell founded Rid-All Pest Control in Jacksonville. He retired in 1988 when his son, Jeff, assumed leadership of the family business.
Gene was a founding member of Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church and served as Deacon for many years. He was a member of Jacksonville Rotary Club, receiving a Paul Harris Fellow Award. He was a lifetime member of the Illinois Pest Control Association, serving on the Board of Directors and receiving the Distinguished Service Award in 2003. He was also a lifetime member of the National Pest Control Association and was proud to have been instrumental in the development of the Termite Procedures Manual.
Gene was a very involved member of the Jacksonville community. He was an outdoors man, and enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family. He especially loved his ice cream.
