Mrs. Ethel Mae Holtzclaw-Hawkins was born on July 9th, 1948 to the parents of Willie Lindsey Holtzclaw and Virgiree Mathews Holtzclaw in Titus, Alabama.  Ethel accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and united with Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Sylacauga, Alabama.  Where she served as President of the junior usher board and a member of the senior usher board. 

Ethel received her education in the Sylacauga City School System and graduated from East Highland High School with the class of 1967.  She continued her education and attended N.F. Nunally Technical College and received an Associate Degree in Business Administration. 

Ethel held various employment opportunities at, Sylacauga Shell Plant Company, Community Action Agency, Sylacauga Foodstamp Office, and Alabama Department of Public Health until her retirement in 2013.

Along Ethel’s life’s journey she met the love of her life, Mr. James Alford Hawkins. James and Ethel united in holy matrimony, to this union one child was born. 

Ethel enjoyed life to the fullest, her vibrant smile and caring spirit spoke volumes for those who knew her.  She was a vitreous and phenomenal woman of God who loved her church, family and community.  Ethel was an icon in her own way and was an avid Alabama Crimson Tide fan. 

Ethel departed this walk of life on Monday, November 7th, 2022 at her residence in Sylacauga, Alabama.  She was preceded in death by her husband, James Alford Hawkins, parents, Willie Lindsey Holtzclaw and Virgiree Mathews Holtzclaw, siblings, Earnest June Bozeman, Thomas Ray Holtzclaw, and Sarah Holtzclaw Leonard.  

Ethel’s love and legacy will forever be cherished by her loving and devoted daughter, Sylvia Player of Sylacauga, AL; God daughter, Carolyn Leonard of Tumeckula, CA; siblings, Willie Holtzclaw of Sylacauga, AL, Jerry “Chic” Holtzclaw of Marietta, GA, and Geraldine (Edward) Holley of Sylacauga, AL; grandchildren, Ajike (David) Walker of Marietta, GA, and Skyler Player of Sylacauga, AL; one great granddaughter, Ariane Shanelle Walker of Marietta, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
