Esther M. Weisman, a retired program director for the YWCA of Greater Baltimore and family matriarch, died of Alzheimer’s disease Monday, March 2, at home surrounded by her devoted and adoring family. She was 83. Born and raised in Yonkers, NY, she was the daughter of Joseph Chillemi, a successful entrepreneur, and Domenica (May) Aiello. She was a 1949 graduate of Yonkers High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in science, with honors, from the University of Baltimore. She founded a program at the YWCA of Greater Baltimore to assist women struggling with under or un-employment that helped thousands of clients regain their economic footing. The program reflected her core values of discipline, education, and independence.
A lifelong devotee of physical fitness, Esther took up running in her forties and soon became a serious competitor, regularly placing as a top finisher. She was an accomplished classical pianist and lifelong patron of the arts.
