Esther Jane Turner, 97, of Salem died at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2014 at the Blossom Nursing and Rehab Center. She was born Jan. 23, 1917 in Salem, a daughter of the late Carl E. and Ethel L. (Sommers) McLaughlin. Esther was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, a 1936 graduate of Salem High School and a member of the Salem Senior Citizens. She loved crocheting, knitting and crafts. Her husband, Howard E. Turner, whom she married May 22, 1937, preceded her in death on Aug. 6, 1990. Survivors include two daughters, Beverly Jane (James) Hippley of Salem and Margaret Edith (Donald) Kemp of Guilford Lake; a son, Robert J. (Jeannie) Turner of Fort Meyers, Fla.; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Frederick, Ervin, William and Glen McLaughlin; and a sister, Edith Blythe.
