Esdail McCoy Venable was born on August 16th, 1913 in Columbus County, North Carolina. She was the 4th born of 9 children. The Lord called her home early Wednesday morning, July 30th, 2014, at Seaviw Hospital in Staten Island, New York, where she resided the past 7 years. Until that early Wednesday morning, Esdail was the last surviving child of the late James and Lucy (Monroe) McCoy.

“Dale”, as she was affectionately called, was briefly married at a young age. Sometime in the early 1940’s she moved to New York and lived with her sisters Theodosia and Althea. She worked as a housekeeper but spent most of her years working in a hospital until she retired from Queens General Hospital in 1977. She continued to live with Althea and helped rear her nephew, Randal, until her declining health in 2002.

“Aunt Dale” loved children. Her nieces and nephews can remember looking forward to the mailman bringing them packages of sweets, clothing, and other treats from Auntie.

Dale had amazing resiliency and won many health battles over her centennial life. She recovered from breast cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. You would never have known she was diabetic because of her disciplined diet. Dale was well known for baking cakes and pies but would never eat more than a pinch avoiding the need for medication. At age 99 her doctor was amazed how she recovered from a bad stroke in just one day. However, her twenty-year bout with Alzheimer’s was too much. She joined our Heavenly Father while peacefully sleeping.

Dale’s siblings who preceded her death are; Archie McCoy, Theodosia Brown, Rodney McCoy, Idell Davis, James McCoy, Mahalia Spencer, Derious McCoy, and Althea McCoy. Dale was a beautiful, compassionate person whose precious memory will live on in her nephew, Randal McCoy, his wife Theresa and their children, Marcus, Elijah, and Claire, plus more than a dozen nieces, nephews, and countless relatives.
