Selma – Ervin Prentice Chafin, 90, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, October 1, 2012 at 9:48 p.m., at his home surrounded by his immediate family and Pastor Dennis Trimble. Ervin was the first son born to William Chafin and Jane Evans Chafin on July 9, 1922, at their home on Middle Burning Creek, Mingo County, West Virginia. Ervin had 10 siblings and was very close to each of them; they called him “Big Brother.”

            Ervin was married for 50 years to his late wife Ruth Naomi Hensley Chafin, prior to her death on January 9, 2001. Ervin had many interests, including being with his family and friends.

            Ervin attended Middle Burning Creek School before leaving home at age 15 to join the Civilian Conservation Corps, serving in the State of Montana building structures in National Parks and sending his earnings home to his family. Ervin joined the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, where he served with the 71st Troop Carrier Squadron in the European Theater. Ervin was involved in battles in Normandy, Northern France, and the Rhineland.

            Ervin was preceded in death by his parents; wife Ruth Naomi Hensley Chafin; two brothers, Bobby Chafin, and William Jennings Chafin; six sisters, Lorraine Chafin Estepp, Louise Chafin Howard, Nora Lee Chafin Sobczak Cunningham, Ruth Chafin Belville Murphy, Ethel Mae Chafin Shimp, and Melva Chafin Howard; also a stepson, Gary Lee West.
