Ernestine M.

Ernestine is survived by one son, Gene Morton of Littleton, Colorado, his wife Vicki and a daughter in-law, Becky Morton, the spouse of Ernestine’s beloved second son, the late Stuart A. Morton, of Oakland, California. Four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews still observe her memory.

Her dedication to a long enduring faith in God, her family and the performance of big band era music, was supplemented with writing poetry, working as office manager for orthodontists and winning tennis trophies.

She lived a life of many stories. Here’s one of her favorites. Her father, postmaster in Terlton beginning in the depression years, and extending into the 1950’s, paid her to clerk in the post office. In the afternoons, after her father relieved her of duties, she crossed the wide dusty street, racket in hand, and waited beside the tennis court for someone to show up for a practice round. One summer evening, Jim, her husband to be, sauntered by with his own racket at his side and made his formal introduction. Many tennis dates followed. As she wrote later, “Love in the tennis score became love in the heart.”

Thanks to exceptional health over many years, laughing at adversities and excellent health care in her later years, she celebrated a long and productive life. Her final passing was eased by her primary care physician working with hospice care, where, as comfortable as anyone could have hoped, she passed on to join her Lord, husband, second son and many other family members and friends, all partners in faith.

Inside the eastern gate awaits

Celestial paradise.

A stone and mound of earth—

A monument to birth—

In memory to console.

A vault my soul cannot contain.

On a higher plane

I’m learning a new language

      of life.
