Erland G. Olson, 87, of Newington, passed away on Monday, April 21, 2014. He was the beloved husband of Beverly (Hyde) Olson and was predeceased by his parents, Carl and Svea (Peterson) Olson, and his brother, Robert Olson. Earl was a veteran of World War II and earned his B.A. from the University of Connecticut. After a long career at Travelers Insurance Company, he retired in 1984 to travel throughout the United States and abroad with Beverly. He loved traveling, playing golf and watching UConn Basketball. Earl was an active member of The Half Century Club, a life member of the #19 BPOE and Travelers Retirees Club. He was a very kind and loving man whose happiest moments were spent with family and friends. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he will be dearly missed by his wife of 61 years Beverly, his daughter, Janet Merkent and her husband, Stephen, of Colchester, CT; his son, Richard Olson, of Agawam, MA; five grandchildren, Ryan Merkent and his fiancé, Kathryn Saltzman; Christopher Merkent and his wife, Jennifer, Matthew Merkent, Ricki Lee Olson and Aleks Olson; and one great-grandson, Lucas Merkent.
