Emmett Jelks was born on February 21, 1942, in Hurtsboro, Alabama to Frank Sr. and Lessie Jelks. He received his education in the Russell County School System before moving to Indianapolis, Indiana.
Emmett received Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age. He rededicated his life to God a few years ago.
Emmett worked for the Carpenter’s Union as a drywall hanger until retirement.
Emmett passed away peacefully on Monday, September 12, 2022, after a long courageous battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Sr. and mother, Lessie; three brothers, Frank Jr., Otis and James Jelks, and one daughter, Keisha Jelks.
Emmett is survived by sons, Earl (Naomi) of St. Paul, Minnesota, Kimberland DeWayne, William Sr. and Emmett Gerald Jelks of Indianapolis, Indiana; daughters, Karen and Katrina Jelks and Kelli (Paul) Strayhorn of Indianapolis, Indiana; in addition to twenty grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rosie Beard of Indianapolis, Indiana and Geraldine Smith of Gary, Indiana; and a host of other relatives and friends.
