POTHARST, Emma Nelly, 82, of Palmetto Bay, passed away Monday, December 12, 2011 following a battle with cancer. Emma was born December 21, 1928 in Bloemendaal, The Netherlands. Emma grew up an only child raised by her mother, Cornelia. After high school Emma attended college and got a Pharmaceutical degree. Emma met her husband to be, Kees Potharst, at the Tennis Club. They married on May 7, 1955 and emigrated to the United States on November 14, 1955 settling in Connecticut where they lived for 7 years. Kees got a position at DuPont in 1963 as an agronomist that took Emma and the family all over the world. They lived in South Africa, Australia and Singapore while Emma raised their four children. They moved back to the U.S. in 1974 to Houston for 6 years before settling down in Miami. Emma was an enthusiastic needle pointer throughout her life. She was loved by everyone who met her and had many close and life-long friends around the world. Emma also loved cooking and was constantly checking out new recipes that eventually became family favorites. Her husband, Kees Potharst, who died on April 27, 2009, preceded Emma in death. She is survived by their four children: son, Cornelis (Kees) and his wife, Robin of Oakton, VA; daughter, Helen and her husband, Scott Porter of Kerrville, Texas; son, Glenn and his wife, Cecilia of Kendall, Florida; son, Jerry and his wife, Patty of Lake Placid Florida; grandchildren, Ross Porter and his wife Sarah, of Minot, ND; Jackson Porter of Kerrville, Texas and Andrea and Julie Hall of Miami, Florida.
