On a beautiful winter morning, January 14, 2013, Emma Eliza Martin Schwartz left the earth quietly, yet reluctantly, and returned to the loving arms of her Father in Heaven and His Son Jesus Christ. She was re-united with her husband Melvin, her mother and father (James Hamilton and Pauline Christensen Martin) and three brothers (James “Pepper”, Edward Rich and Paul Andrew). She was welcomed by countless others whose lives she had touched and changed. It was a joyful reunion. Emma fulfilled her divine earthly mission with honor, integrity, and exactness.

From an early age she cared for her mother who had been paralyzed by a series of strokes. She was a devoted daughter and sister. She also cared for her father and three brothers. She would leave for Logan early on Monday morning and attend college during the week and return on the weekends to cook and clean for her family and care for her mother.

She married her eternal companion, Melvin Leo Schwartz on June 24, 1943 in the Salt Lake Temple. The couple continued to live with Emma’s parents so she could care for her mother along with her family. Later, they built a home next to Emma’s parents so she could care for her father after her mother passed away. Emma never complained and was a tireless worker and perfectionist. On October 8, 1966, her beloved husband Mel, passed away suddenly and thereafter, Emma taught school to support her family of three.

Emma’s life was one of service to others. She served in the auxiliaries of the church and as ward organist. She exemplified charity in all she did. Emma firmly believed in the power of education. She received an award for never being absent or tardy for all of the years in elementary and secondary school. She attended college in Logan at Utah State University and earned her degree in elementary education. For 44 years, she was a first grade teacher and believed in teaching values and integrity along with reading and writing. She was beloved of her students because she would not allow them to fail or to achieve less than what they were capable of doing.

Emma’s life is a legacy of faith and endurance. She never gave up. She seemed to know that this life is a test and she passed it valiantly. She is survived by three children, Elaine S. Dalton, (Stephen) Melvin James Schwartz (Jami), and Robert Martin Schwartz; 10 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
