Mrs. Emma Bell, Indianapolis, passed away on the early morning of Tuesday, August 27, 2019. She was 83. Emma was born April 15, 1936, a daughter of the late Johann and Sophia (Thaler) Muehl.
Emma was born in the German community of Tekendorf, Romania where she lived with her family until 1944 when, during World War II, the advancing Russian army forced them to leave everything and migrate north to Austria to ensure their safety. Her family endured great hardships in this trek north. She would live in Austria and was educated there and then immigrated to America in 1957. It was here that she would meet and later marry Hans Bell on April 5, 1957.
The young couple moved to Boise, Idaho where Hans’ parents had immigrated and soon saw the birth of their only son, Erhard on March 25, 1958. In 1960, the family moved to Indianapolis. Hans and Emma became United States citizens on April 19, 1971. She and her husband were active in the Indianapolis Liederkranz, a German men’s singing club, where she was President of the Women’s Group for several years.
She enjoyed cooking and baking and sharing her creations. She was especially known for baking the most exquisite Black Forest Cherry cake. She and Hans were phenomenal dancers and would dance a superb Viennese Waltz. She particularly cherished the time she could be with her family, especially her grandchildren. Emma was of the Lutheran faith.
Emma is survived by her son and his wife, Dr. Erhard and Barbara Bell; her grandchildren, Erin and Robert Smith and Christopher Bell; her great-granddaughter, Adaline Smith; her sister and brother-in-law, Hedwig and Rudy Weinhardt as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in passing by her beloved husband, Hans Bell and her brothers, John Muehl and Michael Muehl.
