Emily Ortiz Chavez, 82, a lifelong resident of Grant County passed away on November 18, 2016 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Emily was born August 8, 1934 in Santa Rita, NM to Elisandro Dominguez Ortiz and Antonia Torres. She left the home at the age of 17 to help her family and proceeded to Silver City, NM caring for those in need at Hillcrest Hospital. After that, she continued to care for the elderly throughout her lifetime. She was always there for her family and her siblings. She met Gregorio C. Chavez from Santa Rita. NM and were married on March 26, 1956 in Lordsburg, NM. On July 24, 1993, Gregg passed away after 37 years of marriage. She worked at Piggly Wiggly and Safeway for several years as a meat wrapper. Emily was a loving daughter, mother, wife, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt. We will always remember her humor and being there for her siblings and family. May you rest in peace. The family chain is broken, but little by little we will reconnect .
Emily is survived by two sons; Randolph O. Chavez and wife Jodi of Houston, Texas and John Chavez of Las Cruces, NM; one daughter, Charlene C. Franco and husband Jerry of Tucson, AZ; six grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; she is also survived by three sisters, Nellie O. Baca and husband Genaro of Faywood, NM, Ramona O. Gonzales and family of San Lorenzo, NM and Gloria O. Purdy and husband Rick of Albuquerque, NM; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Emily was preceded in death by her parents Elisandro in 1981, and Antonia in 1996; her husband, Gregorio C. Chavez in 1993; two sisters, Maria Ygnacia Ortiz in 1931, Betty O. Garcia in 2001 and one brother, Enrique T. Ortiz in 2011.
She was loved and will be missed.
