Elynor M. Nergenah, 79, of rural Jacksonville, IL died Saturday, November 3, 2012 at Heritage Health in Jacksonville.

She was born February 7, 1933 in Jacksonville, the daughter of James Howard and Muriel Hazel Standley McFadden. She married Robert L. Nergenah on December 23, 1954 in Jacksonville and he preceded her in death on February 9, 2002.

She is survived by three children, William L. Nergenah of Brookshire, TX, Mary N. Fergurson (husband, Boyd E.) of Jacksonville, and Bruce R. Nergenah of Houston, TX; and three grandchildren, Brett Haney of Manhattan, KS, and Hallie Fergurson and Anna Fergurson, both of Jacksonville. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Mary Alynne McFadden in infancy.

A 1950 graduate of Jacksonville High School, Mrs. Nergenah studied at Millikin University and later graduated from MacMurray College with the Class of 1954. She retired following a distinguished career in teaching, first at Manchester Elementary School and later as a home bound teacher for Jacksonville School District #117 for several years. She then joined the faculty at Routt Catholic High School, teaching English and French for 34 years. In recognition of her devotion to education, she was awarded the Golden Apple Award by WISC TV in Springfield.

Elynor was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Belles Lettres at MacMurray College, and for over 50 years served as the secretary for Ebenezer Cemetery Association. She enjoyed needlework, caring for her many feline friends, and listening to classical music. Yet her true love involved the written word, which she not only taught, but was also an avid reader, book collector, and frequent visitor to bookstores where she could visit with authors and friends who shared her passion.
