Elwood Brawley Sides, Jr. passed away peacefully on July 10, 2013, at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center, after a prolonged illness. He was born on June 25, 1931, in Miami, FL, to Hazel and Elwood B. Sides. His family moved to Deland, FL, the Carolinas and eventually settled in the Washington, DC area. As the oldest child, he dropped out of school in the 7th grade to help support his mother and four sisters. Later, he returned to school obtaining his GED and completing two years of collegiate studies at the University of Baltimore.
