Lee was born in Stockton, MO to Fred and Ollie (Anderson) Bean. The family moved to Melba in the 1930s. He graduated from Melba High School in 1942. After attending the College of Idaho for a short time, he served in WWII as a radio operator on the USS Ganymede in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he received a BS in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Idaho in Moscow in 1951.

He married Myrtle Betts from Nampa in 1947 and they were married for 66 years. Myrtle predeceased him in 2013.

He worked for Toro Irrigation for many years before starting an irrigation consulting business, specializing in golf course irrigation and design. He was a creative thinker and inventor. He continued to challenge himself in retirement by learning to paint and play the banjo. Myrtle and Lee loved traveling around the country in their Volkswagen camper. He truly loved life and loved to entertain and tell jokes to everyone he met.
