Elsie Pugh Cody, a native of Whatley and resident of Grove Hill, passed away peacefully on Jan. 22, 2022 while at Grove Hill Memorial Hospital. Elsie was born on Sept. 5, 1939 to Pearl Glenn Pugh and Lee Franklin Pugh in Whatley. She also attended school in Whatley. Elise relocated to Connecticut with her husband Clifford and their children, where she raised them into adulthood. When Elise moved to the city, she still carried her country roots. She adored being outdoors where she would garden, fish and try to fix anything that was broken. She spent every Saturday teaching her grandchildren the art of fishing. Elsie created a life devoted to her family and caring for all in need. She spent many years teaching those around her many skills on hard work and most importantly of love and loyalty. Elise’s home was always open to those in need. Her heart was always filled with acceptance and plenty of love. She will forever be considered “momma” and “grandma” to all who knew her.
Elsie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clifford Cody; her children, Barbara Neal Cody, Patricia Ann Cody and Mary Ann Cody; two brothers, Willie and Johnny Charles Pugh; son-in-law, John D. Lattimore; and a granddaughter, Casey Cody.
Left to cherish her memories are her daughters, Arthurine Lattimore of Whatley and Sharon Cody of Manchester, Conn.; sisters, Pearl Rankins and Marion “Boosie” (Elbert) James, both of Grove Hill; brothers, Tommie Earl Pugh and Larry (Bessie) Pugh, both of Grove Hill; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
