Mrs. Begle was an extraordinary woman whose fierce loyalties and sharp wit made her a force to reckon with in this world. Born on July 24, 1916 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Elsie Pierce was raised in a tightly knit family who prized education. She graduated from the W. S. Perry School, Ann Arbor High School and attended the University of Michigan as a classics scholar and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. Breaking down barriers from an early age, Elsie Pierce was the first woman elected as managing editor of the Michigan Daily.
