Elsie D. Green, beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, and grandmother passed away peacefully at home in Denver, Colorado surrounded by family on December 10th, 2013.
In 1975, she and Phil transplanted their family of 3 daughters to Colorado in what was anticipated to be a two year stay. However, the move became permanent as they fell in love with the mountains and the Colorado lifestyle. While in Denver, Elsie underwent a complete change in her professional life as a former bookkeeper for a mid-sized accounting firm in Manhattan, NY. At age 42 she went back to college (Metro State) to become an elementary school teacher. She then taught upper elementary students, primarily as a “Bilingual Teacher.” Equally fluent both in English and Spanish, she brought her gifts of a quick mind, a Brooklyn toughness, and an unfailing compassion to her students year in and year out. She taught in Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Eagle, and finally Colfax Elementary in Denver, where she retired in 2007 after 27 years in the field. She was regarded by her students and their families, as well as her colleagues as a “Master Teacher” and was instrumental in launching versions of Odyssey of the Mind, Astronomy Ventures, and many other special events at the schools where she taught.
Elsie leaves behind many family members and friends who will miss her strong and beautiful soul. She is survived by her husband and partner in life of 49 years, the Rev. Dr. Philip Green, Jr.; daughters Carolyn (Neal) Newman of Oakton, Virginia; Cindy Green of Denver, CO; and Christy (Jon) Crowe of Parker, CO; five grandchildren, Joshua, Matthew, and Eleanor Newman; Thomas and Michael Crowe; sister Cora Clark; and two brothers Alex (Guane) DeJesus, and Michael DeJesus. She also leaves behind an extended family of a father-in-law, sisters-in-law, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. All of whom she loved deeply. Elsie was one of five siblings. Her parents Natividad and Moises DeJesus, and one sister, Sylvia DeJesus LaGrega preceded her in death.
