Elroy Forrest Hawes, “Roy” was born on September 14, 1931, and passed away on January 15, 2022, at the age of 90 with his loving family by his side. Roy was born in Glendora California to Leroy and Bernice Hawes. He attended and graduated from Chaffee High School in 1948. Roy played the clarinet in his high school band and kept a love of music all his life.
After graduation Roy joined the Air Force as a Supply Technician. He was stationed at Oxnard Air Force Base where he met the love of his life, Doris Nan Garrett. They met at a picnic in Santa Paula and knew right away they were destined to be together. They were married on December 5, 1953. They spent the next 66 years together before her death in April of 2020.
Roy and Nan were blessed with three children whom they loved dearly. Roy worked tirelessly to take care of the family he cherished. After leaving active duty with the Air Force, Roy went to work for the Federal Government. He was employed at Norton Air Force Base in San Bernadino California. After many years there he took a promotion to McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento California. While living in Sacramento, Roy decided to attend college. After working all day, he would attend class in the evenings to improve his promotional opportunities within the Federal Government.
After 4 years at McClellan Air Force Base, the family moved to Oxnard to be closer to family. Roy received another promotion to Port Hueneme Naval Base where he worked for several years before transferring to Point Mugu Naval Air Station.
While at Point Mugu, Roy became involved with Toastmasters. He founded two new clubs, was a very sought-after speaker and earned the title of “Distinguished Toastmaster”. Roy ran for district governor of Toastmasters and won.
Roy worked as the Supply Officer (civilian side) until his retirement in 1989.
Roy and Nan moved to Ventura California in the summer of 1997.
Roy was the BEST husband, dad, grandpa, and great grandpa ever. He was affectionately known as “Pa”. He was brilliant, (particularly in history) funny, a great talker and loved his family fiercely. He is missed every minute of every day.
Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Nan Hawes, parents Leroy and Bernice Hawes, brothers Norman and Gail Hawes, grandson Kelley Jerome Thomas, nephew Steven Dering, sisters-in- law Patricia Dering, Judith Garrett and Joanne Hawes, and brothers-in-law Bill Dering and Keith Baldwin. Roy’s sister-in-law Linda Baldwin passed away one month after him.
He is survived by his children, Sandra (John) Wilusz, Edward (Sharon) Hawes, and Kelley Jo Thomas. His grandchildren Jason (Kilee) Hawes, Sherri (Rich) Prickett, David and Steven Wilusz, Sara (Blake) Davison, Daniel (Sydnee) Thomas. His great grandchildren Kaitlyn, Zoey and Jaxon Hawes, Emily and Logan Prickett and Fynlee Jo Thomas, his brother-in-law Max Kelley Garrett Jr as well as numerous nieces and nephews who thought the world of him.
