The prominent Eloy Cano, Sr., born December 19, 1936, in Harlingen, Texas, to Israel and Rosita Cano, will be memorialized with extreme honor and with the utmost respect as a man who personified tranquility and justice. On January 13, 2016, with his family joined together, Cano entered eternal life.
Throughout his life, Cano embodied service. In 1956, at the tender age of 19, he joined the United States Army and served his country proudly and with great dignity. Shortly thereafter, in 1959, he married Zulema Galvan, and together they created an incredible life story which can only be seen through the lives of their service and children. It was in 1969 when Cano began anunforgettable profession of law and justice. His initial service began as a patrolman with the City of Harlingen’s police department. With his diligent work, he became a detective of the force through 1980, when he pursued the realm of law with the Cameron County Sheriff’s Department. His service as lieutenant and captain with the county steered him to further his service, and in1983, Cano graduated from the 132nd Session FBI National Academy in Washington, D. C. It was May 22, 1984, when Cano was appointed as Justice of the Peace for the county of Cameron. He was subsequently appointed as the Municipal Judge of the City of Combes, and on December 31, 1997, Cano concluded his service as Justice of the Peace and came full circle when he became Chief Administrator for the Cameron County Sheriff’s Department onJanuary 1, 1998.
The caliber of Cano’s passion for law and justice was so intense, and he served with honor at every level of service to the City of Harlingen and to the county of Cameron; however, his stature as a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather was no comparison to his service of law and justice because he served his family with profound love and commitment as a father to his children, Veronica Cano, Velma Yzaguirre (Rudy), Eloy Cano, Jr.(Melissa), Zelda Quintanilla (Daniel), and Liza Jo Avalos (Anthony); to his grandchildren, Elise, Vanessa, Christine, Raul III, Eloy III, Marie, Sofia, Sebastian, Julia, Michael, Isaiah, Alexa, India, Salome, Jacob, Kenya, and Zayda; and to his great-grandchildren, who all survive Cano. He also enjoyed being a brother to his surviving siblings, Rosa Elia Garza (Raul†), Roy Cano (Isabel), and Alma Alicia Howell, and an uncle to many.
Expecting to greet Cano at heaven’s doors are his parents, Israel Cano, Sr. and Rosita Cano, his brother Israel Cano, Jr., and his sister, Raquel Galvan.
