Elmer John Van Waardhuizen was the second of five children born to Arie W. and Mae (Kool) Van Waardhuizen. He was born July 6, 1923, in Summitt Township near Cordova, Iowa. Elmer received his early education at Fair Oaks County School and earned his GED in 1974. On December 28, 1948, he was inducted into the United States Army at Fort Riley, Kansas. He served in the 17th Field Artillery Battalion, Fort Sill, Oklahoma. One year later he transferred to Active Army Reserves and honorably retired as a Sergeant First Class on July 6, 1983. Elmer worked as a mechanic for VerPloeg Implement, Allis Chalmer, White Way Auto Garage, and the last twenty-eight years of his working career he was employed as Director of Transportation for Pella Community Schools. He also repaired and sold lawn mowers.
His hobbies included collecting toy tractors and wood working. He built several small barns for his grandchildren. He enjoyed music, gardening, playing cards, and camping with the Wooden Shoes Good Sams Club. His all time favorite thing was baking and cooking, which he always shared with others.
