Elmer E. Scheer, 74, of Jacksonville, IL and formerly of Beardstown, IL died Friday, September 11, 2009 at his residence.

He was born July 7, 1935 in Beardstown; the son of August and Pearl Elizabeth Bower Scheer. He married Peggy Winner on October 31, 1986 in Las Vegas, NV and she survives.

He is also survived by three sons, Terry Scheer of Independence, IA, Randy Scheer (wife, Karen) of Ashland, and Rick Scheer (wife, Denise) of Quincy; two step daughters, Tammy and Priscilla Phillips, both of Rushville; six grandchildren, Heather Scheer, Josh Scheer, Bryan Scheer, Kara Scheer, Jesse Scheer, and Cody Scheer; four great grandchildren; a brother, Louie Scheer (wife, Betty) of Mt. Sterling; several nieces and nephews; and his faithful dog, Sadie Sue Sue.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Marilyn; a sister, Bernice Hammer; and three brothers, Robert George, and Ed Scheer.

A graduate of Beardstown High School, Mr. Scheer was employed as an auto mechanic and worked at Oscar Meyer for several years. He then worked many years as a union carpenter with Jacksonville Local #904. He used his skills to assist in the construction of several Habitat for Humanity homes in the Jacksonville area. He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. A former little league coach and scout leader, he was always willing to help his neighbors. He enjoyed craft work, camping, and walking his little girl, Sue Sue.
