Elma Fowers McKay, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend passed away peacefully on January 8, 2020, with her family by her side. She was 91 years old.
Elma was born on May 14, 1928, the daughter of George and Charlotte Ivy Green Fowers. She was proud of her heritage as a farm girl raised in Hooper, Utah, where she grew up surrounded by family and friends that were dear to her throughout her life. She graduated from Weber High, attended Stevens Henager College and worked as a lab technician for the Utah Canning Company in Ogden.
One of the highlights of her life was serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Southern States Mission from 1957-59. Elma’s faith in Jesus Christ was the foundation of her life, not only as she served her mission and in various callings in the Church, but as she loved and served all those around her every day.
It wasn’t long after she returned from her mission that she met Donald Shorten McKay, who became her eternal companion on March 8, 1962, in the Logan Temple. She and Don shared a lifetime of deep love, commitment and friendship that was a beautiful example to her children and grandchildren.
Elma and Don welcomed each of their children Mike, Gary and Christine into their family and filled their home with love, cherished memories and gospel teaching.
Elma’s talents for baking and cooking, gardening, home canning, oil painting, crocheting, quilting, sewing, ceramics, and endless other crafts were a blessing to her family and countless others. She was well-known for her bread and pastry demonstrations at Relief Society meetings throughout Davis County. Elma’s crocheted hot pads, doilies, and baby afghans were lovingly made and given to people literally all over the world, her hot pads numbering in the hundreds.
Elma’s family will always be grateful for her never-failing love and support and the way she made our world a brighter, happier place to be.
Elma is survived by her children: Mike (Nancy) McKay, Gary (Lisa) McKay, and Christine (Nate) Stuart; grandchildren: Kellie McDonough, Tyler McKay, Brittney McKay, Savannah McKay, Jordan (Karli) Stuart, Danna (Brandon) Packer, Ethan (Anne) Stuart, and Kate Stuart; four great-grandsons and one sweet great-granddaughter. She is also survived by one sister-in-law, Luana (Ron) Thomson. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and three brothers: Carl, Howard and Rulon Fowers.
Elma’s family would like to extend our deepest appreciation to her friends and caregivers at Country Care Assisted Living as well as the many “angels” at Bristol Hospice.
