On March 6, 2019, Ellison E. Groh, passed following a brief illness. He was in his 95th year.
Born in 1923 to John and Mary (nee Larkin) in York, Pennsylvania, he would spend the balance of his life in Glen Burnie. An orphan at an early age and growing up during the Great Depression Ellison would learn the values that would make his generation, “the greatest generation.” He worked at the Locke Insulator Company as an electric forklift operator for several years before World war 2. When his country needed him he answered the call and enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942. As an Electricians Mate, Ellison would serve in the Pacific Theatre at the naval submarine base on Midway Island. Though he was reluctant to speak at length about the war, his experiences would shape his opinions about war. For Ellison’s faithful service, he would be honorably discharged in 1946 as an Electricians Mate 2nd Class, earning the Good Conduct medal, the American Theatre Ribbon and the Victory medal.
Following the war he would continue as an Electrician for the Bethlehem Steel Ship Yard and finally retired from the United States Coast Guard Yard in Curtis Bay. Ellison enjoyed thirty years of retirement.
He was married in 1952 to Lillian “Jeanette” (nee Reynolds ) and together they would start a family in 1954. They would be married for a total of 67 years, a milestone by any measure. Their home was known as a “place of the written word,” and Ellison had a reverential respect for books, magazines and newspapers. He was known as a man of few words and a man of character who stuck to his principles and believed in teaching his children respect. He was a devoted provider to his family, in more ways than could be realized. Until the day he died, it was said, his concern was for others; in this case the well being of his dear Jeanette. Ellison enjoyed horse racing and a cold beer and was a member of the American Legion Post 40, the VFW and the Knights of Columbus for a time.
Ellison is survived by his dear loving family, including his wife, 7 children and numerous grand and great-grand children.
