In the early morning of April 6, 2022, Ellen Lois passed away peacefully at her home in Staatsburg, NY. She was surrounded by love, with her husband of 63 years, Gene, at her side, as well as her four children. She was 86.
Ellen was born in 1935 to Marie and Edward Markham of Lowell, MA. The family moved to Peekskill, NY, as Ellen entered high school. Vivacious and popular, Ellen was a cheerleader for Peekskill High School, where her future husband was a star athlete.
Following high school, Ellen became a registered nurse, a fashion model, and, most importantly to her, the mother of four children.
Graceful on skates and horseback, Ellen skied with family into her 70s and remained elegant and dignified throughout her life. She had impeccable style, was an avid reader, and enjoyed travel, exploring new sights and restaurants. She gave generously of her time, volunteering for Hudson Valley Hospice and the Huguenot Historical Society of New Paltz, among other charitable endeavors. Her magnetic personality, her love of people, and her flawless memory for personal details drew others to her and kept them close.
Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, and by her siblings, Peter and Marie.
She is survived by her husband, Gene, her children Karyn (Douglas) Pulsifer, Dale (Robin) Lois, Glenn (Wendy) Lois, and Jon (Tammy) Lois, and by twelve grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Her beautiful spirit will live forever on her beloved Shelter Island, and in the hearts of her loving family.
