Ellen Kathleen Murphy Schultz – Kathleen Schultz, 99, of Morgantown, departed this life after a sudden heart attack at 1:00am on September 4, 2014 in the ICU at United Hospital Center, Bridgeport. She had been a resident of the Heritage Nursing Home in Bridgeport for several years.
She was born on March 31, 1915, the youngest of three daughters of Riley and Josie (Furr) Murphy of Glenville.
Kathleen is survived by her loving niece, Margaret Kathleen Zerbest Waldeck and husband William of Clarksburg. Unable to have children of her own, her niece was always as close as a daughter. She is also survived by the apples of her eyes, her great niece Amanda Ellen Waldeck of Pittsburgh and her great nephew Jeffrey William Waldeck of Pittsburgh.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years Cecil Schultz in 1990. Also preceding in death were sister, Norene Murphy Zerbest in 2005 at the age of 97 and sister, Mary Ann Murphy Yeager in 2012 at the age of 102.
Kathleen graduated from Glenville State College with a BA in teacher education. She received a Master’s in education from WVU. She was a devoted teacher for over 40 years. She began her teaching career in one room schools in Gilmer County. She settled in Morgantown with her husband in 1953, where she began teaching first grade, a position she loved so much she continued teaching that grade until she retired at the age of 70. She was a beloved first grade teacher at Osage Elementary and later at Riverside Elementary. She prided herself in the fact that she had on a number of occasions taught the parents or grandparents of current students.
She was a member of Soroptomist International where she served as President for several terms. She greatly enjoyed mentoring other women in business ventures. Kathleen and her husband owned and operated Schultz Rentals in Morgantown for many years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Morgantown.
