Ellen J. Read, 94, of Beardstown, IL, formerly of Ashland, IL and Three Lakes, WI, died Sunday, February 28, 2010, at Heritage Manor East in Beardstown. She was born August 18, 1915, in Poysippi, WI; the daughter of Charles Manley and Ora Oosterhous Shelley. She married Walter L. Read on June 10, 1937, in Mattoon, WI and he preceded her in death on January 22, 2002.
She has survived a daughter, Faye Shaw (husband, Ronald) of Ashland; a son, Wayne Read (wife, Jane) of Marble Hill, MO; eight grandchildren, Mary Ellen Klepzig of Pleasant Plains, Sara Shaw of Springfield, Carla Coker of Bryan, TX, Mory Read of Raleigh, NC, Tamara Varghese of Charlotte, NC, James Read of Zebulon, NC, Brian Read of Raleigh, NC, and Curt Read of Campbellsport, WI; three step-grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; a brother, John Shelley (wife, Beverly) of Altoona, WI; two sisters, Audrey Fetty of Lincoln, NE and Emily Garton (husband, Don) of Belle Vista, AR; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Shelley (surviving wife, Amna of Mt. Clemens, MI), and three sisters, Alice Shelley, Ethel Sanchez, and Janet Cox.
Mrs. Read formerly taught school and later served as a cook for Three Lakes School in Three Lakes, WI. She enjoyed gardening in her spare time.
