Mrs. Ella V. Shanks was born November 9, 1927, in Thrall, Texas, to the late Ruby and Eddy Roy Thomas. She spent her formative years in Thrall. She accepted Christ at a young age and was baptized at Mt.
She married Elijah Curtis and to this union Ruby Faye Curtis was born. Ella later united in matrimony to the late Arthur C. Shanks, the love of her life, on April 7, 1949. Seven children were born to this union.
Ella attended San Diego Community College – ECC, where she received a certificate in Clothing and Tailoring. She was self-employed as a seamstress and tailor. Ella enjoyed a professional reputation, making sure to always provide quality workmanship for her customers.
Gardening was her passion. She was often described as having a “green thumb.” Anything she planted would grow. Ella was a self-taught interior decorator and made a warm and comfortable home for her family. In her later years, she became an avid bowler and especially enjoyed the camaraderie of her league members.
Ella had a caring, compassionate and loving spirit. She was frequently described as having a strong will and was loved and respected by many, because she always spoke her mind and gave her truthful opinion.
Ella departed this life on Friday, July 18, 2014, at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in San Diego. Left to cherish her memory are eight children, Ruby Thompson of Philadelphia, PA, Myrtle Marks of San Diego, CA; Muriel Young of Rialto, CA, Arthur C. Shanks, Jr. of Vacaville, CA, Sharon Nelms of San Diego, CA., Cheryl Cormack of Las Vegas, NV, Rodney Shanks of Moreno Valley, CA and Eric Shanks of San Diego, CA. She had fifteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. She loved and was loved by three surviving sisters-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends, and Linda Carter of Gulfport, MI., whom she loved like a sister.
