Mrs. Ella (Frew) Karl, 93, of Naperville, formerly a resident of Peru, passed away February 20th, 2014 after a long illness.
Ella was born on September 10, 1920 in Peru to Archibald and Janet (Wilson) Frew of Oglesby. Ella married Russell Karl on June 12, 1948 in Oglesby. She attended LaSalle-Peru High School graduating in 1938. Ella attended Methodist College of Nursing in Peoria becoming a registered nurse in 1942. After graduating from nursing school, she went to work at People’s Hospital, as well as, doing post graduate work at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago. Ella was a nurse while serving in the Army as a second lieutenant in the Asian-Pacific theatre during World War II. She was stationed on the islands of Okinawa, Guam and Tinian, as well as, being stationed in Korea. After leaving the Army in 1946, she returned to work at People’s Hospital until she retired in 1982. Ella and her husband, Russell were married for 63 wonderful years. They were able to travel extensively throughout the United States and Europe. Ella volunteered for the Red Cross for many years and donated over a gallon of blood while working the bloodmobile. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ and active in the Wedding Band. She was a long time member of the American Legion. Ella enjoyed traveling, oil painting, baking, crocheting and crafts, as well as, spending time with family and her many friends.
She is survived by her daughter, Beverly (David) Fayfar; her son, Randy (Debby) Karl; 5 grandchildren, Kristin (Brian) Grojean, Karla (Bradley) Herdrich and Juliet Fayfar and Emily and Michael Karl and one great-grandchild, Olivia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell on October 28, 2011; one son, Kerry; four sisters, Margaret, Janet, Jean and Thelma and her brother, Thomas.
