Elizabeth McCaffrey Clarkson, 93, East Ridge, was born to John and Nora (Davis) McCaffrey on May 29, 1918, in Atlanta, Ga., but the family moved back to Rome, Ga. when she was a toddler. She was the third of four children and the only girl. Then the family traveled back to Tuscaloosa, Ala. with her “Uncle” Karl and Aunt Tennie. When Elizabeth was eight years old, the family relocated to Birmingham, Alabama. Elizabeth left not long after the Great Depression, moving to Chattanooga, where her Aunt Tennie and Uncle Karl were living. She worked during the day and attended Kirkman Technical School at night, learning how to keypunch and operate the IBM mainframe equipment. She then attended Edmondson Business College and worked at Combustion Engineering, processing the payroll checks (So much for girls not needing an education).
