Salem Elizabeth M. Christie, age 102, of Salem died Saturday evening, June 25, 2011 at Colonial Place in Elkins where she had been a resident and received excellent care the last few years of her life.. Born March 17, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Darwin J. Davis and Bertha Hickman Davis. After graduating from Salem College in 1927, Elizabeth returned to get her teaching certificate in 1958 and then taught elementary education in the West Virginia school system for twenty one years. While serving as cheerleader at Salem College, she met R. Paul Christie who was a basketball and football star there. On June 6, 1929, she and Paul were united in marriage at Salem Methodist Church. They enjoyed nearly 70 years together until his death on February 2, 1999. She is survived by two sons, Donald P. Christie and wife Jean of Princeton, WV and David F.Christie and his wife Cheryl of Oak Harbor, OH.. Also surviving are ten grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death are her parents, two brothers, Frank K. Davis and Darwin J. Davis, a sister, Dorothy Lang; son William B. Christie; Daughters-in-law, Frances L. Christie and Carolyn S. Christie; grandaughter, Vicky Christie and grandaughter, Janet Christie. Elizabeth participated in many things over the years and remained active into her nineties. She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church for fifty years where she served as President of United Methodist Women, taught Sunday School, and belonged to the Trainer Tawasia Class. She was a fifty year member of Orpha Chapter #30 of Eastern Star, a member of Salem Garden Club and Salem College Auxillary. She loved athletics, especially basketball, and was an avid fan when her husband coached basketball at Middleburne and Wheeling Tridelphia, and continued to enjoy watching her sons, grandsons, grandaughters, great-grandsons, and great-grandaughters play in various sports over the years. She loved and was loved by her family, many friends, and neighbors. Elizabeth had a sweet disposition which endeared her to others and she was devoted to her husband and family as they were to her.
