A Life Well Cherished

Mrs. Elizabeth Laurene Broadnax, born January 30, 1922 went from labor to reward on November 14, 2017 at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland.

She was the daughter of the late George and Pearl Coley of Fremont, North Carolina.  She attended Fremont Public Schools where she later attended nursing school to become a registered nurse.  At the age of 20 she then relocated to Washington, DC where she worked at Holy Cross Hospital on the Labor and Delivery floor for 25 years.   It was at that hospital where she met and eventually married Judge Lee Broadnax.  Elizabeth was a member of Church of God of Prophecy located in Washington, DC.  While there she was the Sunday school Superindent and also a Sunday School teacher.

In the1990s, she became a member of the Greater New Hope Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Reverend Doctor Melvin G. Brown.  She was an active member of her church for many years.  She was the president of the Senior Choir and loved to sing.

Elizabeth enjoyed her hobbies of gardening, fishing, crafts and shopping.  She always wanted to have a new outfit for church.  She didn’t feel complete until she put on her church hat.   Her favorite foods were fried fish, fried potatoes and a pepsi cola.

Elizabeth was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend; who will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.  She leaves to cherish her fond and precious memories, one son, Michael Newton; one daughter Rita Watson; one son-in-law Kenneth Watson; two grandchildren Tyesha and Donte Dixon and two great granddaughters Skylar Dixon and Leah Marbury.  All resides in Maryland.  One nephew Bishop Billy Newton of Smithfield, NC; one great nephew by marriage Walter Dickerson, Sr. of Suitland, Maryland.
