Elizabeth L “Betty” Heckman (Blenkhorn) passed on February 11th surrounded by her family after complications from emphysema. The only child of Veronica A. Pitcher (Robinson) and Stafford Blenkhorn Jr. She was born in Portland, Maine in 1942. Married to John C. Heckman who predeceased her. Her passion for animals was second only to her love of her family. While intensely private in her personal life, she held 2 very public positions for nearly 30 years as Animal Control Officer of Middleton and Danvers until her retirement in 2011. She fulfilled her childhood dream of living in the country and owning her own farm. She was self-accomplished and a respected breeder of German Shepherds, Rottweiler’s and Pembroke Welsh Corgis. Betty cherished her association with Danvers Animal Hospital and her many friends there. She was co-founder of Strays in Need, a nonprofit animal rescue organization.
