Elizabeth Juliana (Julie) Patricia Mary Gallagher De Celie, age 94, of Toms River, NJ passed away May 22, 2016. Julie was born March 8, 1922 in Dublin, Ireland to Kathleen and Edward Gallagher. She immigrated to the United States in 1926. During the depression her family moved around quite a bit in North Jersey.

After marring the love of her life, they moved to Staten Island and began raising a family. Eventually, moving to Cozy Lake, NJ and then finally to Holiday City Berkley some 30 years ago. Julie graduated from St. Michael’s High School in Newark and from Holy Name Hospital School of Nursing in Teaneck, NJ. She loved nursing, especially her years in labor and delivery at Holy Name Hospital and St. Vincent’s in Staten Island, NY. She retired as Assistant Director of Nursing at ILGW Union Health Center, NYC.

Julie’s love of singing and deep faith were evident as a past President of Holiday City Berkeley Melodiers, past Secretary of Alter Rosary Society of St. Maximilian Church, member of St. Max’s Choir, H.C.B. Irish Club, Italian Club, Bocce Club and a volunteer at Birthright, Toms River. Julie was predeceased by her loving husband, Paul, of 54 years. “Remarry? Why? After I’ve had the best, how could I settle? And give up the remote!” As well as her mother and father, Kathleen and Edward Gallagher, her brother, Thomas, and her great-grandson, Nicholas Kay.

Julie is survived by four children: son, Paul and daughter-in-law Janet Berry of Omaha, Nebraska; son, Angelo and daughter-in-law Tammy of Leland, NC; daughter, Joanne and her fiancé, Mike Furrule of Toms River, NJ; son, Peter and daughter-in-law Marianne of Middletown, NJ; eleven grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, her sister, Joan De Celie of Staten Island, and many loving nieces and nephews. Julie urged her children to reach for the very best they were capable of becoming, showing by example how one could succeed in being a parent and caring nurse. Julie loved traveling, especially by Panjo, the boat she and her husband built in the garage.

She loved being around all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She left each of us with individual special memories, making every child, grandchild and great-grandchild feel especially loved. Julie had an Irish saying for all occasions, and as she said to us all when commenting on our behaviors; “Twasn’t off the ground ye licked it!”
