Elizabeth Ann “Liz” Goodwin, 82, died at Edgewater Retirement Community in West Des Moines on Monday, August 16, 2021. Liz was born in Des Moines on December 26, 1938, to Emmett and Mary (Gibson) Snider.
Following her 1957 graduation from Roosevelt High School, she attended Iowa State University and then completed her teaching degree at Colorado College. Liz had a lifelong love of learning and believed in accessible education for everyone. She began her career as a teacher, served with the local and state Parent-Teacher Associations then later was elected to the Des Moines School Board (1991-1997).
Liz grew up attending Westminster Presbyterian Church and has been a member of Central Presbyterian Church for over 40 years. As a passionate gardener and conservationist, she participated in the Des Moines Garden Club and Edgewater Gardening Group. She was a member of PEO, co-led an Edgewater Bible Study, and served on the BWA Foundation Board. During retirement, when not in Iowa, Liz and her husband, Bill, divided their time between winters in Tucson and summers in Colorado.
Liz is survived by her children, Andrea Goodwin (Terry O’Callaghan) of Sacramento, CA, Geoffrey Goodwin of Denver, CO, and Jocelyn Goodwin (Jimmy Gonzales) of Denver, CO; six grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Sara (Dr. Alfred C.) Zimmerman of Denver.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Goodwin.
