Elizabeth B. Murphy, age 82, passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord on December 4, 2021 at home surrounded by her loving family following a valiant three year battle with cancer.
Elizabeth, who preferred to be addressed as Betty, or Betts by her husband, was born November 28, 1939 to her mother, Betsy Buchanan Mulholland and her father, George Mulholland in Greenock, Scotland. At the young age of nineteen, Betty embarked on her trip to America where she met her partner, best friend and lifelong love, Richard D. Murphy of Trumbull, CT. The two were married on September 2, 1961 and had just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary milestone this past September.
Her family knew her as a courageous woman with a warm smile and strong Scottish spirit. She loved to read, garden, do her morning crossword puzzles and was an avid fitness enthusiast. Most of all she loved her family and instilled in them strong values which have and will continue to serve them well throughout their lifetimes. She will be dearly missed and forever in her family’s hearts.
Betty was predeceased by her parents, her brother, George Mulholland and Mother-In-Law, Marietta H. Murphy. In addition to her loving husband, Betty is survived by her devoted children, James D. Murphy and his wife Karen of Shelton, CT, Douglas R. Murphy of Siesta Key, FL, Karen E. Gibson and her husband Stephen of Stratford, CT and Glen R. Murphy and his wife Jill of North Smithfield, RI. In addition, she is also survived by her sister, Mary Mulholland Cootes of St. Annes Lancashire, England and her cherished grandchildren, Connor Murphy, Autumn Murphy, Lauren Murphy and Gage Murphy.
Betty was a devout Catholic and longtime parishioner of St. Catherine of Siena where she regularly attended mass for over 40 years.
