On November 18, 2019 after a courageous nine year battle with ovarian cancer, Beth Winkler enjoyed one last breathtaking sunset on the river and peacefully sailed from this life surrounded by those she loved.
Born on June 30, 1946 to Howard and Libba Crisler, she was raised in the small town of New Madrid, Missouri, the youngest of three. She leaves behind her sister Jan Stewart and brother Howard Crisler.
She was an athlete in every way and in everything she did. She learned to windsurf while living in Israel in 1980. Focusing her athletic energy on windsurfing culminated in qualifying for the US Olympic team several times while in her fifties. Better known as Surf Mama while teaching at her beloved Banana River Resort, she was a master instructor who successfully helped many athletes achieve their dreams of participating in the Olympics.
Her most gratifying achievement came from the success of her children, Sue-Chris Carty and Jeff Bynum DDS, as well as her grandchildren Christopher, Patrick, Keeley , Noble, and Levi.
She treasured time with her grandkids sharing her passion for water sports, art and pottery, as well as international travel.
The discovery of her “happy place” on the Caribbean island of Bonaire, lead Beth and Greg to become part-time residents. The rejuvenating water and the beautiful windsurfing community gave her many years of happiness.
She was known for her kindness, tenacity and bravery. She will be missed by many.
