Elizabeth “Liz” Ann Shumake, 85, of Sharpsburg, GA entered life on June 6, 1936 and stepped from Piedmont Newnan Hospital into the heavenlies on Friday, September 10, 2021. Liz was born in Oxford, PA to the late Franklin Reynolds Stroud & Edna Dorothy Ramsey Stroud.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Richard Stroud. Liz grew up in Oxford, PA and was a 1954 graduate of Oxford High School. She went on to attain a music degree from The Peabody Conservatory of Music of Johns Hopkins University and a nursing degree from Wilmington General Hospital School of Nursing. Though she loved both medicine and music, in the end she decided that music was good medicine and it played a central role in her life.

She relished playing cello in multiple orchestras with her pinnacle role being first chair in the Centre Strings Orchestra. She was also an excellent piano and trumpet player, most often using her musical talent to serve the Lord. Liz loved and served her church, Cornerstone United Methodist, in a myriad of ways including participating in one of her favorite outreaches, Red Bird, to help people in need in the Appalachian area. She valued a rich Bible study and spent many years in leadership at BSF (Bible Study Fellowship) helping others know God through His Word.

Liz spent 61 years married to her continuous heart throb & favorite dining partner, Ted. She adored her children and grandchildren and was intimately involved in their lives leaving a lasting imprint on each one. Though she relentlessly supported the Atlanta Braves, her favorite sporting event was whatever game her grandchildren were playing (mostly soccer). She consistently kept in touch with each child/grandchild through encouraging handwritten letters, often stuffed with cash for whatever was needed. Liz’s generosity knew no bounds and she was just as quick to drive an elderly widow on an errand, paint somebody’s walls or deliver a hot meal as she was to write a check to one of her many charities.

Liz relished a good card game and her spry competitive spirit lent to much bantering back and forth along with deep gut wrenching laughter. Liz’s chief joy in life was the matchless love and grace she found in Jesus Christ and she invited folks from all walks of life to go with her to Bible Studies or church so they could know Him too. She staked her life on Philippians 1:21, “To live is Christ and to die is gain.”

Liz is survived by her husband, Ted, 3 children & spouses, 10 grandchildren, 1 great grandson, and 3 siblings whose photos fill her shelves and adorn her walls. Her legacy lives on through Teri (children Laura & Allison); Trudy (husband Grant and sons Ian, Nathan, Wesley & Landon); Steve (wife Jenny & children Luke (Liza) Matthew, Andrew & Noah); great grandson, Bennett, (son of Carl & Allison); siblings Kathleen, Yvonne, Denny and a multitude of extended family and friends. She was deeply loved and will be fiercely missed.
