Mrs. Elizabeth Ann “Betty” Reamer, 93, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully at Elkhart General Hospital following a long, rewarding and wonderful life on Thursday, February 10, 2022 at 6:20 pm, surrounded by her family. She was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania on January 22, 1929 to the late John and Elizabeth (Kelly) Parrish, and went on to marry her dear Jerome “Jerry” Reamer on New Year’s Eve, 1976. Jerry survives at home after 45 beautiful years together.
Betty is survived by a son, Gary (Kathy) Slagle of Windber, PA; daughters Vicky Slagle of St. Augustine, FL and Sherry Dixon of Reading, PA; a step-son Brian (Dawn) Reamer of Murfreesboro, TN; sister Char Squeri of Dallas, TX and an incredibly large and loving host of extended family including grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, dear friends, business colleagues and a few neighbor ladies who enjoyed coming over to join Betty at poolside and soak up the sun. Betty is also preceded in death by a son, Wesley Slagle; a brother John Parrish and sister, Olive Griffin.
Among Betty’s countless life adventures, she began to develop a reputation of being that one personable and compassionate friend who always seemed to be there when you needed her. She was kind, genteel and loving; and was a dedicated mother and spouse; but oh boy could she wind up a bowling ball and rocket that grape down the alley for a strike down at Signature Lanes while bowling the leagues with Jerry in her earlier days!
She was able to direct her compassion toward others by being in the Greencroft Auxiliary for over a decade, as well as being a personal caregiver to many of her friends who have since passed. She always considered caring for others to be among the noblest of duties, and we would be remiss if we did not mention the caring acts of Tina Pettis, who was Betty’s caregiver for 15 years. Over time, they developed a special bond and friendship that was steeped in trust and mutual respect for what they meant to each other.
Betty was blessed to be able to work with her husband for many years as a parts supplier for the van conversion manufacturers. However, when she wasn’t “on the clock”, she absolutely loved to sit outdoors by her pool and spend time with her friends, family and neighbors. We’re pretty sure that summer couldn’t come around fast enough for our dear Betty.
