No amount of planning for one’s life would ever prepare one for the circumstances surrounding Eleanor Modrak’s final day on this earth on December 15, 2017. While the tragedy was only for a moment, her being a part of it would speak volumes to the selfless life she lived for 91 years. Her final act in this world was putting her own safety aside and wanting to be sure her beloved grandson was not in harm’s way. How fitting for a woman of God who gave her lifetime to loving and caring for others. Eleanor was born in Carroll County, Georgia and was the daughter of Huett and Ruby Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister JoAnn S. Varner. The Smith family moved to Coweta County in 1930. Eleanor graduated from Newnan High School. Love came into Eleanor’s life early and she married her sweetheart Cyril Modrak, better known as “Cy”. They created a wonderful family farm full of children, animals, gardening and a lot of chickens. Eleanor attended business school in Atlanta. She was the first female to be named as a manager for Woolworth’s and managed the Newnan store for many years that was located where the Coweta County Justice Center is now located. She would later operate a day care center to help working mothers and named it Small World Nursery. Oh, how she loved children! Her own or yours, it did not matter whether to whom they belonged. She always had those arms wide open to share her heart full of love. Eleanor’s world changed forever after the death of beloved Cy in 1993. She managed to fill up her days with tending to her family farm. She came to be known as “The Egg Lady”. Included, at no charge, with the eggs she sold, would be a listening ear for the latest news, a good story or the latest events in her family. What a wonderful example she was to her children Scotty Scott and wife Lynda of Newnan, David Scott and wife Louise of Newnan, Bruce Modrak and wife Shannon and Sherry Daniel. She was the marvelously doting grandmother to Jeff Scott, Libby Scott Dillard and Andy, Shannon Scott, Kristi Modrak Flinn and Dennis, Kimberly Modrak Garmon and Jeret, Keith Modrak, Felicia and Gary Steves, Melinda and David Wrighter, Billy Joe Hughes. There are countless great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, friends who were like family.
